About this piece
Three settings of poems by Edna St. Vincent Millay for soprano and eight cellos, commissioned by Richard Aaron for the Cleveland Institute of Music Cello Ensemble and premiered at the College of Wooster in January 2000. In the composer's words, "all three of the poems are either addressed from or to otherworldly voices."[1] The 2024 recording by soprano Gabrielle Haigh and the Erie Coast Cellists gave its name to an album that pairs it with cello-ensemble works by Pärt and Villa-Lobos.
