About this piece
Marta Ptaszyńska wrote The Gates of Light in 2021 for the Cracow Duo, cellist Jan Kalinowski and pianist Marek Szlezer, who recorded it on their album Dedications, Vol. 2 (DUX, 2023). In her note for PWM she describes it as a virtuoso piece in the form of an extended ballad, made of many contrasting sections that move between deep lyricism and brilliant, energetic passages before a dynamic ending. At about nine minutes it makes a strong recital piece alongside her earlier Moon Flowers.
