About this piece

A two-minute lament for solo cello by North Carolina composer Brittany J. Green, written for cellist Tom Clowes. Over a slow, solemn 6/8 built on a gently repeated dotted figure, the music rises to an impassioned, heavily vibrated climax high on the A string before sinking back to a held low E.

Technical overview

Solemn 6/8 at a slow tempo. Mostly in bass clef in the lower positions, with a short treble-clef passage that climbs to E on the A string, quintuplet semiquaver figures with an accelerando, and a molto vibrato passage in thirds and sixths. Grace-note accents on the low strings and a pianissimo close.
