About this piece

The second volume of Early Start on the Cello, Egon Sassmannshaus's cello tutor in the English edition by his son Kurt Sassmannshaus. It carries on from Volume 1 with the second finger and new keys, and brings in dotted notes, sixteenth notes, first double stops and the extended finger pattern, including switching between normal and extended patterns within a two-octave scale. Nursery rhymes and folk songs sit alongside classical recital pieces for two cellos, such as a Siciliano by Bertold Hummel, to build note reading and ensemble playing. The 64-page book keeps the colour illustrations and fingerboard charts of Volume 1, and Bärenreiter suggests using Volume 3, which is arranged by finger pattern and key, alongside it.

Technical overview

First position with the extended finger pattern: two-octave major scales such as D major use the extended pattern in the lower octave and the normal pattern in the upper. Slurs of up to four notes, dotted rhythms, sixteenth notes and 6/8, and two-cello pieces with double stops, sforzando accents and hairpin dynamics.
