About this piece

Suzuki Cello School, Volume 2 is the second cello book of the Suzuki Method, the approach of the violinist and teacher Shinichi Suzuki, in which pupils learn by listening to recordings in a "mother-tongue" approach, usually with private lessons and group classes. It has twelve numbered pieces, from Bayly's Long, Long Ago and Mozart's May Time through two Bach minuets, Handel's Chorus from Judas Maccabaeus, Weber's Hunters' Chorus and Paganini's Witches' Dance theme to Gossec's Gavotte and Handel's Bourrée, plus a tonalization on R. Taki's The Moon over the Ruined Castle. Some pieces are introduced by short preparation exercises. The book is a Federation Festivals 2020-2024 selection, and a separate piano accompaniment book is available.

Technical overview

Mostly first position, with second position brought in and marked in Bach's Minuet No. 1, a 3/4 piece with mf/p contrasts, hairpins and a ritardando the second time. The preparation exercises for Gossec's Gavotte practise short strokes that stay on the string through rests, grace notes, slurred staccato in semiquavers, four-note slurs and right-hand pizzicato, with a footnote on how to pluck. Handel's Bourrée is an espressivo Allegretto in common time with long crescendo and diminuendo hairpins and a caesura.
