About this piece

Inspiration Cello! Book 3 is the last of Joanna Borrett's three books of cello duets, with four original duets for two cellos: Summer Memory, Highland Meeting, Variations on a Christmas Carol and Morning Prelude. The publisher grades them from Grade 6 to Grade 8 and notes that they are mostly in bass clef. Summer Memory is impressionistic, Morning Prelude is built on natural harmonics and sweeping tunes, Highland Meeting has a lyrical Scottish character and the Variations are light-hearted. Borrett is a British composer who was a cellist before turning to composition.

Technical overview

Summer Memory is an Adagio in 5/4 that shifts through 4/4, 6/4 and 7/4, with tremolo chords, natural harmonics, held high notes and short passages in tenor clef. Highland Meeting is an Andante espressivo in 6/8 with dotted and Scotch-snap figures, semiquaver turns and tremolo double stops. Variations on a Christmas Carol has fast quaver runs in the upper positions, chords and triple stops, a trill and a pizzicato close. Morning Prelude opens with a long melody played entirely in natural harmonics in one position, while the second cello rests, and ends with pizzicato.
