About this piece

A study book in Schott's Cellissimo series, edited by Beverley Ellis and Rainer Mohrs, with 120 études for easy to intermediate players in the 1st to 7th positions. It is arranged by topic so a teacher can choose a study for the skill at hand: warm-ups, a tour of the keys in the 1st to 4th positions, tenor clef, position changes, string crossing and bowing, legato, staccato and mixed bowings, studies in popular styles (slides, blues and swing, rock, Latin and funk), the 5th to 7th positions, velocity, and a virtuoso finale. Many studies have accompanying parts for a second cello or piano, available as a download, so they can be played with a teacher or friend. Composers include Amanti, Bréval, Dotzauer, Feuillard, Koeppen, Kummer, Lee, Susanne Paul, Popper and Romberg, alongside new studies by Ellis. The edition keeps original fingerings and adds practice tips; text is in German and English.

Technical overview

Opens with first-position warm-ups using chromatic finger patterns and closed and extended hand shapes, then studies in each key in the lower positions, such as a Dotzauer Allegro in E minor in 6/8 with optional second position. Later sections introduce tenor clef with short duets, flowing arpeggio studies that cross all four strings with dynamics from p to f, and fast sixteenth-note velocity studies broken into practice sections.
