About this piece

Edson Leite, a São Paulo conductor, organist, pianist and composer who taught as a full professor at the University of São Paulo and directed its orchestra, OSUSP, wrote Aurora e poente ('Dawn and sunset') in 2025 and dedicated it to Júlio Cerezo Ortiz. It is a short Andante in G minor: the cello sings a plain line of quarter and eighth notes over broken-chord piano writing. A middle section wanders through falling chromatic phrases full of A-flats and B-naturals before the opening tune comes back and settles on a held G. Leite has made the score and parts free through Musica Brasilis.

Technical overview

An Andante in G minor and common time, in bass clef throughout and kept in first position, from the G at the bottom of the staff (with A-flats in half position on the G string) up to middle C. The real work is reading accidentals: A-flats on the D string need a forward extension, and B-naturals, F-sharps and E-naturals come and go. Long runs of even eighth notes carry no printed slurs, so bowings are the teacher's choice; dynamics stay between p and mp, with rit. and a tempo marks and a closing hairpin.
