About this piece

Eduardo Martinelli built this duet on 'Marrequinha', a tune by Agripino, the Pantanal master of the viola de cocho, and dedicated it to the Duo Santoro. Agripino Soares de Magalhães taught young people in Corumbá to build the viola de cocho at the Moinho Cultural and died in 2020 at the age of 101. The piece is a bright G major Allegro: cello 1 carries the tune high on the A string while cello 2 drives it along with dotted rhythms, staccato double stops and short countermelodies, and both parts close pizzicato. Martinelli's Air and Cor de canela, also for two cellos, draw on Agripino's music too.

Technical overview

An Allegro in G major and common time, in bass clef throughout. Cello 1 sits mostly in 4th position on the A string, reaching the G above middle C, with long tied notes and repeated-note eighths. Cello 2 is the busier part: dotted eighth-sixteenth patterns, staccato double stops against open strings, slurred sixteenths and two-note chords. Both parts end pizzicato.
