About this piece

Cibelle J. Donza, born in Belém, Pará, in 1985, trained as an orchestral conductor at Ithaca College, directs the Orquestra Filarmônica MultiArte da Amazônia, and conducts the Orquestra Sinfônica Altino Pimenta at the music school of the Federal University of Pará, where Donza also teaches. Olho d'água dates from 2022, is dedicated to the Duo Santoro, and was on the programme of the duo's 2025 tour of Rio de Janeiro state. It opens energico with fortissimo accented double stops and long trilled notes, then settles into a slow lundu over plucked bass notes and Bartók pizzicatos. A passage of shifting 3/8 and 4/8 bars with accented chords and glissandos leads back to the lundu and to a last energico outburst, which fades to a soft plucked chord.

Technical overview

2/4 at quarter = 120 (energico), with a Lundu at quarter = 45 and later bars of 3/8 and 4/8. Both parts play fortissimo double stops and three- and four-note chords, long trills, pizzicato and Bartók pizzicato, glissandos, and triplet and sixteenth-note passages; cello 1 also reads treble clef. Dynamics range from p to sff, with frequent sfp attacks on held notes.
