About this piece

Linda Catlin Smith finished Das Rosen-Innere in Toronto on 15 January 2024; it was commissioned by and is dedicated to Doina Popescu. Marked 'with fluidity and grace' at quarter note = 56, it begins with the cello holding long, very quiet notes in treble clef while the piano, with the pedal held down throughout, adds short arpeggio figures around them. Later the cello drops into its lower register, first sul tasto and then in slow chains of double stops, before a final ppp note. Anton Lukoszevieze and Kerry Yong of Apartment House recorded it on Smith's album Flowers of Emptiness (Another Timbre, 2024).

Technical overview

The opening asks for sustained ppp notes high in treble clef with very slow bows, and the score distinguishes long square fermatas from shorter round ones. From the middle on, the part moves between treble and bass clef and is built on sustained double stops, with sul tasto colour and metres changing among 3/4, 4/4, 5/4 and 6/4; the difficulty lies in tone and bow control rather than speed.
