About this piece
Roseane Yampolschi, a composer who teaches at the Universidade Federal do Paraná and completed a postdoctorate in composition at King's College London, made this expanded and revised second version of Candeias for unaccompanied cello in 2018 and dedicated it to Shante Cabral. In her performance notes she asks for very flexible time and for gestures drawn so clearly that the listener feels energy, impulse and intention. The music shifts constantly between normal bowing, sul ponticello and sul tasto, and between bowed tremolos that speed up or slow down, glissandi, harmonics, col legno and snap pizzicato, before a final spiccato run rises quietly and quickens to the end. She gives the duration as about eight minutes.
Technical overview
A rubato solo at quarter = 40 to 62 that changes meter almost every bar, from 2/4 to 6/4, written mainly in bass clef. It calls for double stops under measured and accelerating or slowing tremolos, natural and false harmonics including harmonic glissandi, col legno battuto, snap and left-hand pizzicato, sautillé and spiccato, and graded vibrato from none to molto. Bilingual (Portuguese/English) notes explain the notation, and the composer suggests laying the pages out side by side to avoid page turns.
