About this piece

Chico Chagas, born in Rio Branco, Acre, in 1971, is an accordionist, keyboard player and pianist who has played and recorded with Milton Nascimento. He dedicated Rapsódia em duo to the Duo Santoro, the cellists Paulo and Ricardo Santoro, who recorded it on their 2022 album O Compositor É Vivo!. The rhapsody strings together short contrasting sections: a G minor opening, a 'Suave' song for the first cello over rocking broken chords in the second, an 'Emotivo' passage in G major over a slowly falling bass of repeated accented notes, and a closing stretch of sixteenth notes shared by both players that ends with chromatic sextuplet scales and a fortissimo final G.

Technical overview

In 4/4 at quarter note = 80, with slower 'Emotivo' and 'Expressivo' sections at 70. The first cello reads bass and treble clef, sustains slow melodies up to the E-flat at the top of the treble staff, and plays long runs of even sixteenth notes in the upper positions, ending with two double stops. The second cello part is much easier: bass clef in the lower positions, with broken-chord eighth notes, a few sixteenth-note scales and chromatic sextuplet runs up from low D.
