About this piece

Ricardo Mazzini Bordini, born in Garibaldi, Rio Grande do Sul, in 1957, wrote this duet for the Duo Santoro in 2022, and Paulo and Ricardo Santoro recorded it that year on their album O Compositor É Vivo!. The title translates roughly as 'The flutter of braids in the skipping bustle of the girls'. Marked 'Brincando' (playing), the music tosses short staccato and thrown jeté figures back and forth between the two cellos; a 'dolce' middle section gives the first cello a slurred tune over a plucked walking line in the second, and later the first cello plucks a melody in natural harmonics. After the opening returns, the piece closes on fff four-note chords and a soft final harmonic.

Technical overview

In 3/4 and 2/4 at about quarter note = 92, chromatic and full of accidentals. The two parts are of similar difficulty: both read bass and tenor clef, play long chains of staccato sixteenths and accented eighths, slurred jeté (thrown) bowings, double stops and three- and four-note chords, and both end on natural harmonics. Most of the writing sits in the lower and middle positions, so the work lies in clean, bouncing bow strokes and tight rhythmic coordination.
