About this piece
Alberto Guerrero was born in La Serena, Chile, in 1886 and is remembered in Canada as the Toronto piano teacher of Glenn Gould [1]. In 1915 he toured Bolivia, Peru, Panama, Costa Rica and Cuba with the trio led by the cellist Michael Penha, reaching New York early in 1916, and these two pieces from that year are dedicated to Penha [1][2]. Chants oubliés is a slow song in E-flat minor in 6/4, written largely in tenor clef over rippling piano chords; Danse opens with a free Lento in 6/8 full of ornamented turns before an Allegro that mixes pizzicato and arco and switches between 6/8 and 9/8 [2]. Joan Harrison and Elaine Keillor recorded both on the Naxos album When Music Sounds: Canadian Cello Music [3].
